Cape Death Registers, 1758 to 1833

The Master of the Orphan Chambers (MOOC) was established in 1673 under Dutch rule and continued during the British rule post 1803. They were in charge of looking after the property of persons that have died and to ensure the last will and testament are fulfilled or in the event of an intestate deceased, that the property is cared for and inherited by the rightful heirs.

The documents are most commonly referred too as MOOC Series 6 and contains three main series, i.e. 6/1, 6/2 and 6/3 covering the period 1758 to 1833. After 1834 the Orphan Chamber was reconstituted and saw the start of the first death notices as they are now commonly known.
