Cape Inventory and Auction Roll Records

This page is dedicated to the Cape Inventory and Auction Roll Records available on the familysearch.org website. The records dates back to approx. 1692, and was the official document to record the possessions of a person in order to determine if they needed to pay estate duty (taxation). There are two main series:

Each of the above series have their own index that is beautifully written and easy to read. Over and above the single index, each volume also have their own index at the beginning of the volume. These are harder to read and are included for completeness, but I strongly suggest you rather use the single series index, for the Cape inventory records, 1692-1834 click here or for the Cape inventory and auction roll records, 1780-1834 click here.

In 2005, Ms Ellen Berends, Netherlands Consul General in Cape Town, initiated a project to translate these documents, which took about 15 months. These records are now published online and can be accessed at Inventories of the Orphan Chamber, Cape Town. Once you have located the original document and you seek a transcribed version, please visit their website and use the “reference field” to easily access the transcription.

How to use this index:

  1. Look up the person based on their surname, using the two key indexes below. Cape inventory records, 1692-1834 or Cape inventory and auction roll records, 1780-1834.
  2. Keep in mind that in the earlier years, women were mostly placed under their maiden surname rather than their married surname. This did change in approx. 1780 onwards.
  3. Once you have located the person you are after, note the number written in the first column next to their name. This number is the volume number that you will need to trace the correct volume. Note that the respective date range is entered in the margin on the left.
  4. Next, note the number written in the second column next to the persons name. This is the record number that contains the inventory and / or auction roll record.
  5. Next, locate the original records in either the Cape Inventory Records, 1692 to 1834 or the Cape Inventory and Auction Roll Records, 1780 to 1834.
  6. NOTE: each volume has their own index at the front of the volume too. These are included for completeness, but I strongly suggest you use the consolidated indexes as these are much easier to read and use.

An auction list (“vendurol”) is a list of possessions that were auctioned by the Orphan Chamber on a specific day. The date and the deceased’s name appear at the top of the list and the signatures of the Orphan Masters who were present are at the end of the list. The deceased’s property and possessions are listed in detail.
